Scaffold for signage removal, Woodbridge Road, Guildford

Project: Scaffolding for signage removal.

Location: Magnet Guildford, Woodbridge Road, Guildford, GU1.

Client: Signage contractor.

Project overview

This project involved removing existing signage from the Magnet store located on Woodbridge Road in Guildford. Due to the height and location of the signage, a temporary access scaffold was required to ensure the safe and efficient execution of the work.

Scaffolding requirements

To facilitate the signage removal, the following scaffolding was required:

Type: Access scaffolding.

Dimensions:

Length: Approximately 5.5 linear meters.

Height: Approximately 6.0 meters (comprising 3 scaffold lifts).

Depth: 8 boards deep (providing a substantial working platform).

Duration of hire: 1 day.

Cost: £600.

Additional requirements: A pavement licence was necessary due to the scaffold’s footprint extending onto the public pavement.

Planning and permissions

Prior to scaffold erection, a thorough planning phase was undertaken; this included:

Site survey: A detailed site survey was conducted to assess ground conditions, potential obstructions (e.g., street furniture, overhead lines), and pedestrian traffic flow.

Scaffold design: A suitable access scaffold was chosen to meet the required dimensions and provide a safe working platform for the signage removal operatives.

Risk Assessment and Method Statement (RAMS): A comprehensive risk assessment and method statement were developed, outlining potential hazards associated with scaffold erection, use, dismantling, and the removal of the signage. Control measures were identified and documented.

Pavement licence application: Given the scaffold’s encroachment onto the public pavement, a pavement license application was submitted to the relevant local authority (Guildford Borough Council). This ensured compliance with local regulations and minimised disruption to the public. The cost and lead time for obtaining this licence were factored into the project planning.

Scaffold erection

On the agreed date, our qualified and experienced scaffolding team commenced the erection of the access scaffold. Key considerations during erection included:

  • Safe zone establishment: The area around the scaffold footprint was cordoned off to prevent unauthorised access by pedestrians and vehicles.
  • Component assembly: Scaffolding components (standards, ledgers, transoms, boards, etc.) were assembled systematically and safely, adhering to industry best practices and TG20:13 guidance.
  • Ladder access: Safe internal ladder access was provided to all working lifts.
  • Fall protection: Guardrails, toeboards and a ladder gate were installed to prevent falls of persons and materials.

Scaffold use and signage removal

Once the scaffold was safely erected and inspected by a member of our team, the signage removal crew gained access to complete their work. The 8-board deep platform provided ample space for operatives, tools, and the removed signage sections. The 2 fully boarded working lifts allowed for easy access to the full height of the signage.

Scaffold dismantling

Upon completion of the signage removal, the scaffold was dismantled in a reverse sequence of erection, following strict safety procedures. The area was cleared of all scaffolding components and left clean and tidy.

Challenges and solutions

  • Pavement licence: The requirement for a pavement license necessitated early planning and application to avoid delays. This was managed effectively by applying well in advance.
  • Public interface: As the scaffold was erected on a busy road with pedestrian traffic, maintaining a safe working zone and minimising disruption was crucial. Clear signage and barriers were used to guide pedestrians safely around the work area.

Outcome

The project was completed successfully within the one-day hire period. The access scaffold provided a safe, stable, and efficient working platform for removing the signage at Magnet Guildford. The scaffolding adhered to all safety regulations and local authority requirements, including the necessary pavement licence. The client’s needs were met, and the signage was removed without incident.

This project also demonstrates our experience in providing safe access scaffolding for busy commercial premises. For another example, view our painting and decorating scaffold project in Market Street, where we erected a bespoke scaffold for external refurbishment works on a busy high street shop, complete with a pavement licence and additional public safety measures.
