We recently completed the installation of a temporary access scaffold at a retirement home located at Imber Cross, Thames Ditton, Surrey, KT7 0LG. The scaffold was required to provide safe, secure access to the roof for essential repair work.
Given the nature of the property and the presence of elderly residents, particular attention was paid to safety, protective measures, and maintaining a secure working environment throughout the project.
To meet the access requirements for the roofing contractor, our expert scaffolding erectors designed and erected a scaffold measuring approximately 10.0 metres in length, 4.8 metres in height, and 5 boards deep. The scaffold provided a stable working platform across the required elevation, allowing operatives to carry out repairs to the roof area safely.
The structure was erected using high-quality scaffold components and installed in accordance with current industry guidance and best practices. The working platforms were designed to provide sufficient space for operatives, tools, and materials while maintaining safe access throughout the project.
As this project was carried out at a retirement home, additional safety measures were incorporated into the scaffold design to help minimise risk to residents, staff, visitors, and the workforce.
The top lift of the scaffold was fitted with debris netting to help contain any lightweight materials and prevent items from falling outside the working area. In addition, foam protection was installed on exposed scaffold standards at ground level. This provided a softer protective barrier around the upright tubes in pedestrian-accessible areas, helping to reduce the likelihood of accidental contact injuries.
All working lifts were fitted with double handrails to provide collective fall protection for operatives working at height. Safety ladder gates were installed at access points to maintain edge protection when workers entered and exited the scaffold platforms.
Tredda plates were also incorporated where required to create safe, secure access routes around the scaffold structure.
Safe access to the scaffold was provided via a fixed ladder system. This ensured operatives could move efficiently between levels while maintaining compliance with safe access requirements.
At the client’s request, a rope-and-wheel lifting system was also installed. This allowed roofing materials, tools, and equipment to be raised safely to the working platform without requiring operatives to carry them up the access ladder manually. The addition of the lifting wheel improved on-site efficiency while supporting safe material-handling practices.
This scaffold was completed on schedule and handed over, ready for the roofing contractor to commence repair works immediately. The installation provided safe, reliable access to all required roof areas while maintaining a high standard of protection around the retirement home premises.
The scaffold was supplied on a four-week hire period for £1,000, offering a practical and cost-effective access solution for the duration of the roof repair project.
