Project type: Painting and decorating scaffold.

Site location: Market Street, Guildford, GU1.

Customer needs: We were contacted by a customer who required a scaffold to be erected to the front of a 2-storey shop on Market Street in Guildford to paint and decorate the building. We provided a quote that included the pavement licence fee, which we applied for on behalf of the customer, and this was for 8 weeks, which was also the scaffolding rental period.

Obstacles and challenges we needed to resolve: This was a high street job, so extra precautions needed to be taken; Guildford council also requested that the scaffold be erected out of hours after 7 pm when the usually busy location was quieter with fewer passersby. Additional safety measures were installed to protect the public from accidents and injuries.

What we Accomplished:

• We erected a scaffold structure to this shop’s front elevation, which was approximately 8 metres long by 6 metres high.
• It featured 3 scaffolding lifts to allow safe access to the dormer’s windows on the roof.
• Each working lift was fully boarded with double handrails and toe boards around the external perimeter.
• The 1^st working platform was situated below the bottom of the 2nd-floor windows, and the top lift was just below gutter height so our customer could reach the dormer windows.
• We installed high-visibility foam to the ground-level upright and diagonal tubes.
• The base plates were put in yellow plastic tredda plates for trip prevention.
• Debris netting was also fixed to both platforms to prevent anything from falling from height.
• A trapdoor and a ladder gate were installed on this structure’s 2nd and 3rd lifts.
• Fixed ladder access was supplied throughout.

Length of hire: The customer required the scaffold to be on hire for 8 weeks, which was when the pavement permit was due to expire.
