Scaffold for roofing works and window access.
Site location: High Street, Guildford, GU1.
Customer needs: We were asked to provide a price for access to the front, back and side of this 3-storey building so that our customer could work on the roof and windows. Our cost was £7500, including the pavement licence fee. We agreed to a hire period of 10 weeks.
Obstacles and challenges we needed to resolve: This was a scaffold on a high street shop in Guildford, so our scaffolders were required to be mindful of pedestrians and traffic as it is a busy part of town.
What we accomplished: This structure had various stages as we needed to provide access to all 3 elevations.
Front: This section was erected over the shop entrance keeping access clear for pedestrians to enter the store safely. First, our team erected a 4-metre by 5-metre high structure to create the first two lifts. We then built a beam section approximately 8m long, which made the scaffold’s third lift which was roughly 7m high. This provided access to the second-floor windows. The top platform was around 8m long and 9m tall, giving safe access to the roof.
Back: Our scaffolders erected a 5m long by 4m high structure with 2 working lifts to access the windows and a further 8m beam section which was around 6m high for roof access.
Side: This was a little more complex as there was a connected building that had a pitched roof. We needed to be careful when erecting this part of the structure to avoid damaging any tiles. The side scaffold was approximately 18 metres long and 9m tall. This section was built using beams because we could not put any weight on the neighbouring roof. We also installed a 4-metre by 2.2-metre hanger that was connected down from the beams to provide access to the side windows.
Then finally, we installed an independent tower that measured roughly 4m wide but was only 1.8 metres high for our customer to access another roof area.
Length of hire: The work our customer needed to complete would take a little longer than the standard 4 weeks we would generally offer, so it was agreed that we would provide a total hire of 10 weeks.
No two commercial projects are the same, which is why every scaffold is individually designed. Alongside roof-access scaffolds like this one, we’ve also built bespoke structures, such as this camera platform at Cobham RFC, for elevated filming and photography.
Having completed a wide range of projects throughout Guildford, from high street commercial properties to private homes, we’re well placed to provide the right access solution for your next project.
