Scaffold access tower for chimney removal on a property in Guildford

Project type:  Scaffolding to remove a chimney.

Site location: Baden Road, Guildford, Surrey, GU2.

Customer needs: Our team were contacted by this customer because they required a quotation to supply, erect and dismantle a scaffolding tower on the side elevation of a semi-detached house in Guildford. This would allow the client to safely access the chimney on the roof’s pitch to remove it. We quoted £750 for this structure, including a rental period of 4 weeks.

Obstacles and challenges we needed to resolve: Our scaffolders faced no issues erecting this scaffolding structure.

What we accomplished:

  • We began by erecting an approximately 4-metre-wide by 8-metre-high tower.
  • A total of 3 scaffold lifts were installed.
  • The base scaffolding lift was for access only and was 5 scaffold boards wide.
  • However, the top working platform was 10 boards wide and was situated just below the chimney’s base. To do this, we needed to position our scaffolding tube onto the roof.
  • We placed a timber board across the roof for our scaffold tubes to rest on so as not to damage the tiles.
  • We supplied the user with ladder access throughout that was fixed securely to the structure.
  • A safety ladder trapdoor was fitted to the top platform for extra fall protection.
  • A ladder gate was also installed on the base lift.
  • Our scaffolders also installed a rope and gin wheel to the framework as requested by our customer, which would help them to remove the unwanted debris from the top lift.
  • Double handrails were fixed around the perimeter of all access platforms.
  • We also fixed toe boards around the base of the lifts to prevent debris, material, or tools from falling whilst the chimney was being removed.                                                         

Length of hire: This scaffold tower was only needed by the customer for a maximum of 4 weeks hire. This was enough time to complete the removal of the chimney.
