Scaffolding with beam section and roof saddle for the removal of a bell tower on East Surrey College

Scaffolding to access a bell tower.

Site location: East Surrey College, London Rd, Redhill, RH1 2JX.

Customer needs: Our estimators were asked to provide a quotation for a scaffold to access a bell tower so that it could be removed from East Surrey College in Redhill. This customer required the scaffolding for 32 weeks, which we included within our price of £6200.

Obstacles and challenges we needed to resolve: No issues were faced when our scaffolders erected this structure; however, our team needed to ensure no tiles were broken on the roof.

What we Accomplished

• We firstly erected a tower from the ground; this part of the structure was approximately 6m high with 3 scaffold lifts.
• We then added an 8m beam section, making up the 4^th lift.
  
• This beamed platform was 6 scaffolding boards wide.
• We then erected a 4-meter throw-in that was roughly 9.5m high from the floor.
• This working area was approximately 14 boards deep.
• We were then required to saddle down the rear of the roof, so access was provided around all four sides.
• Our scaffolders then erected a ring around the top section of the tower. This access platform was approximately 4 metres square and 3 boards deep.

Other Information

• The whole structure was approx. 11.5 metres tall with 6 scaffolding lifts.
• We provided fixed ladder access throughout.
• A safety ladder trapdoor was fitted to the boarded beam platform for additional fall protection.
• Ladder gates were also installed on the higher lifts.
• Two lattice beams were used on the 4^th lift.
• When resting the tube on the roof, we placed scaffold planks on the tiles to prevent any damage from our equipment.
• Double handrails were installed around all working platforms.
• Toe boards were fixed around the lower edges of all boarded lifts.
