A chimney scaffold was erected on this property in Reigate to allow a new flue to be fitted

Site location: Smoke Lane, Reigate, RH2.

Customer needs: This customer required access to a chimney located near the front of their property to install a flue. It was a tall 2-storey building with a prominent apex roof at the front and the chimney just behind. We priced this structure with a 4-week hire period included.

Obstacles and challenges we needed to resolve: There were no obstacles or difficulties when erecting or dismantling this structure apart from having to take extra care to avoid breaking the roof tiles.

What we accomplished: First, we erected a 2.4-metre-long tower that was 8 metres high up to roof height. Our scaffolders then extended the tower into the roof, which made up the 4th scaffold lift. After this, we added a further 3.9m long scaffolding platform which was situated on the tiled roof in the opposite direction to the lower lift, which would support the final platform. We then erected a 5.0m platform which was the last lift to provide safe access to the chimney. Our customer also requested the installation of a gin wheel and rope, which was fixed above the 3rd platform of the scaffold so that they could safely lift their materials and equipment rather than have to carry everything whilst climbing a ladder.

Other Information

  • We used scaffolding boards to rest our tubes on when erecting the scaffold on the roof to protect the tiles.
  • Full ladder access was provided, along with safety ladder gates.
  • A total of 4 steel ladders were used for access to the platforms.
  • This tower reached a total height of 13 metres and had 6 scaffolding lifts installed.
  • All-access platforms were installed with double handrails and toe boards for extra fall protection.
  • The top lift around the chimney was 7 boards wide.
  • All other access platforms were 6 scaffold boards deep.
  • Two support rakers were installed to increase the tower’s sturdiness.
  • This structure was not required around all four sides of the chimney.
 

Length of hire: Within our price, we included a 4-week hire period to complete the flue installation.
