Customer needs

A company contacted us to install a roof and lantern on an Orangery extension for their customer. We gave our client a price which included 4 weeks’ hire. They accepted and booked it in for a date that suited them.

The four-week rental gave the contractors enough time to complete the roof installation without keeping the structure on site longer than necessary. For similar roofing projects requiring temporary access, we offer short-term scaffold hire in Guildford with boarded working platforms for extensions, repairs and other residential building work.

Obstacles and challenges we needed to resolve

We did not face any issues with this scaffolding, as we could access the area at the back of the property easily and there were no obstacles in the way.

What we accomplished

We were required to erect a 2.2 metres high by 10-metre-long scaffold along the back and around one side of this newly built orangery extension. It was built with one working platform that was 5 boards wide to give the ‘chippies’ enough room to install the roof and the lantern. This single-lift scaffolding had double handrails and toe boards around the full perimeter. We also installed a safety ladder gate as an additional fall-protection measure and attached the steel access ladder to the scaffold using ladder clips. This scaffolding consisted of 5 inside uprights and 6 outside uprights. All upright tubes were placed on base plates as normal and rested on sole boards to prevent the scaffolding from sinking into the soft ground. We also installed 2 sway braces to the outside of the structure and 3 normal braces facing inwards on this base-out scaffold.

Length of hire

We rented this scaffolding to our client for 4 weeks to allow them to install the roof fully. Once our client had finished, we promptly dismantled the scaffold.

Another local scaffolding project

Access requirements can vary considerably depending on the location and height of the work. For a chimney repair nearby, we constructed an 8ft scaffold tower on Baillie Road, Guildford, specifically to access the chimney stack.
